Formal membership in the Consultative Group on Biological Diversity is open to foundations that have a focus on environmental protection, restoration, sustainability, environmental health, and environmental justice.

Because our members value the “intimacy” of a small, focused organization, applications for membership are reviewed by a Membership Committee; the Committee then forwards its recommendations to the CGBD Board for approval. Our Bylaws stipulate a moderate growth rate: the Board may approve no more than a 10% growth in membership per year.  In the past decade, CGBD’s membership has been relatively stable at approximately 55 member foundations.

Membership is available only for those foundations that possess their own endowments, since members have expressed a desire to maintain a CGBD space free from fundraising pitches. To date, community foundations have not been eligible for membership.

CGBD has a sliding scale of membership dues, based on the foundation’s environmental grantmaking. You can find the schedule of dues here.
